Kano State Government plans to scrap Ganduje emirate; Sanusi likely to Return as Emir

The Former Emir of Kano State, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi might soon reclaim the throne as Governor Abba Yusuf is seeking to amend the Kano Emirates Law.

The amendment seeks to scrap four emirates which have first-class Emirs; these emirates are Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye.

It was gathered that the bill for the amendment of Kano Emirates Law will be the first official assignment of the Kano State House of Assembly which was inaugurated on the 13th of June and saw the emergence of Jibrin Falgore of Rogo Constituency as Speaker.

Recall that in 2019, the former governor, Ganduje sent a bill to the State Assembly for the passage of the new law which saw the creation of more emirates. This reduced the powers of the then Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to the control of only ten LGAs from 44 LGAs.

The bill will be brought to the House on Thursday and will be read by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini of Dala Constituency.

When contacted over the matter, the lawmaker denied the story but said he would clarify the issue on Thursday.

“If the new law is passed, the state will thus have only one first-class Emir and the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero may be dethroned to pave way for his nephew, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to return to the throne of his forefathers,” a source who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent.
