The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has commiserated with family members and the University community following the death by suicide of a 100-level student of the institution.
A memorandum released by the Union on Wednesday broke the tragic news of the loss of the student, Salako Treasure Timileyin, a part one student of the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Development Studies.
“We regret to inform Great Ife students that Salako took her own life on this very day June 14, 2023. This devastating event has left our entire campus community in shock and mourning.”
The Union described suicide as, “A deeply personal and complex matter, and it is important for us to approach it with empathy, understanding, and sensitivity, though suicide is not an option. We must also recognize that mental health issues, such as depression, can affect anyone, including those who may outwardly appear to be strong or happy.”
The memorandum further reads, “In times like these, it is crucial that we come together as a community to support one another. We must strive to create an environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable discussing their emotional well-being. No one should have to suffer alone in silence. Remember, there is strength in reaching out for help and providing support to those who need it.”
The Union further advised students that, “If you find yourself struggling with your mental health or suspect that someone you know may be facing emotional challenges, we implore you to take action. Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or faculty member. You are not alone, and there are resources available to provide assistance, guidance, and support.”
“Let us remember Salako Treasure Timileyin as a valued student of Great Ife Students’ Union who is dearly missed. As we mourn her loss, let her tragic departure serve as a poignant reminder that our mental health is just as important as our physical well-being.”
“We urge each and every one of you to be vigilant and empathetic towards your fellow students. Notice changes in behavior, lend a listening ear, and show kindness. By fostering an atmosphere of understanding, compassion, and open dialogue, we can help prevent such devastating losses in the future.”
“Please remember that there are dedicated professionals within our Great institution who are trained to provide assistance in times of crisis. Do not hesitate to contact the Student Union and DSA authorities if you or someone you know needs immediate support or guidance.”
“Let us honor Treasure’s memory by committing to take care of ourselves and each other. Together, we can create a supportive environment that fosters mental well-being and helps prevent such heartbreaking tragedies.”
