27-year-old Rukayat Shittu appointed Kwara House of Assembly spokesperson

Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, the member representing Owode Onire state constituency, has been appointed as the spokesperson of the Kwara State House of Assembly.

The youngest lawmaker called for collaboration in setting a developmental based agenda in Kwara State.

In a statement shared on her social media page over the weekend, titled “My first day as honourable member”, Rukayat stated that she has been appointed Chairman of House Committee on Youth, Sports, Tourism and Information, which makes her the spokesperson of the house.

She also explained some recent developments in the house, which includes making 33% principal officers of the assembly female and 25% chairmen of standing committees women.

She said, “Two of our female colleagues, Hon Mariam Yusuf Aladi and Hon Medinat were also appointed as part of the principal officers of the assembly, meaning that out of the 6 principal of the assembly, female members were given 2 principal positions, representing 33%”

She added that, “it is also important to note that, out of the 13 standing committees in the assembly, women are made to chair 3 of the committees, namely Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Commerce, Industry, Women Affairs and Social Development and Youth, Sports and Information.

“This means that women are made chairmen of about 25% of committees in the Kwara State House of Assembly, with yours truly being the chairman of Committee on Youth, Sports, Tourism and Information”.

“As we progress in the activities of the 10th assembly, where I will be serving as its spokesperson, I seek the support, understanding and partnership of everyone, particularly my colleagues in the media and civil society so that we can jointly put development based legislation on the frontline,” she added
