The Young Progressives Party has commended President Tunubu’s promise to implement the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye report after more than a decade of its release.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola Martins on Wednesday, February 28th, described the move as a bold step in the right direction that should be pursued vigorously.
“This report if sincerely implemented will help to drastically reduce the unsustainable high cost of governance, corruption and wastages in government, which are clear contradictions of our socioeconomic realities, hence a threat to good governance,” the statement read in part.
The party, however, expressed doubt in the President’s political will to fully implement the report.
“The worry however is whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu possesses the political will to fully implement this report or just playing politics like those before him who equally set up various implementation committees in time past, only to end up not implementing a single recommendation from the report. May it be stated clearly that partial rather than full implementation of this report may not achieve the desired outcome,” the statement read.
According to the statement, there was no denying the fact that the time had come to reassess the current dysfunctional system and define what works for the nation, adding that revisiting the Oronsaye report is a subtle admission of the urgent need for restructuring.
“The earlier we accept this reality, the closer we get to solving our challenges,” it said, adding that the government should extend this newly discovered boldness to also revisit the 2014 National Conference report under former President Goodluck Jonathan, and the 2008 Justice Uwais report on Electoral reform under late President Umaru Yar’Adua, as both reports contain critical recommendations that will help to address most current problems.
It said; “Conclusively, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has got the golden opportunity to learn from the failures of those before him by doing things differently. We strongly recommend a government of National unity where all patriotic stakeholders can be involved in nation-building, especially in this most trying period in the history of our nation.”
