Sanusi remains Emir – Kano Govt

The Kano State government has announced that a Federal High Court ruling, delivered by Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman on Thursday, confirms that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano.
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, made this statement during a press conference at the Government House on Thursday evening.
He stated, “On June 20, 2024, the Federal High Court No. 1 in Kano issued its ruling on the case before it. On behalf of His Excellency Governor Abba K. Yusuf and the Kano State Government, I address you regarding the ongoing litigation concerning the abolishment of the five emirates and the deposition of the former emirs, including the deposed emir of eight metropolitan local governments. The Kano State Government acknowledges and respects the Federal High Court’s ruling on the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, as it upholds the rule of law.
“The Court’s ruling unequivocally reaffirms the validity of the law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed by His Excellency the Executive Governor on May 23, 2024, at 5:10 pm. This aspect of the judgment is crucial to the entire matter.
“The ruling further implies that all government actions taken before the issuance of the interim order by the honorable Court are validated. This means the abolishment of the five emirates created in 2019 and the deposition of the five emirs are upheld by the Federal High Court, confirming that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano.
“The judge also granted our request to stay proceedings until the Court of Appeal addresses the jurisdictional appeal. Importantly, the law’s signing and the reinstatement of His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, were completed on May 23, 2024, before the interim order was served on us on May 27, 2024.”
