Gov Yusuf announces that Ado Bayero, former Emir of Kano, is now a private citizen

On Wednesday, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State announced that the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, is now a private citizen. This announcement, made through his Chief Press Secretary Sanusi Bature, follows rulings by the Kano State High Court which upheld the State Assembly’s repeal of the 2019 Kano Emirate law, thereby changing Bayero’s status to that of an ordinary citizen.
Governor Yusuf dethroned Aminu Bayero in May and reinstated Muhammad Sanusi as the 15th Emir of Kano. This move came after the Kano State House of Assembly passed the 2024 Kano Emirate law, which nullified the previous 2019 law. Bature, speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, clarified that the court’s decision supports Sanusi’s reinstatement as the Emir, pending further court rulings.
Bature stated, “The Kano State Assembly’s decision has been confirmed by the court. Ado Bayero is now an ordinary citizen. The repeal of the 2024 law invalidated the 2019 Emirate laws that had divided the Kano Emirate into five.”
He added, “Even if Emir Sanusi had not been reinstated, the State Assembly’s constitutional decision to repeal the law is valid. This reverts us to the pre-2019 situation, with Emir Sanusi as the sole Emir of a unified Kano State.”
According to Bature, “The court’s decision, communicated by the Speaker of the State Assembly and assented to by the governor, led to the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi at 5:10 PM on May 23, 2024.”
Bature further explained, “We have filed an interlocutory appeal, which the judge granted. Emir Sanusi remains in the palace and continues his duties as the Emir of a unified Kano while awaiting further court outcomes.”
In conclusion, Bature noted, “The High Court’s validation of the law confirms Ado Bayero’s deposition, rendering him a private citizen like any other Kano resident. He should not occupy any government property, particularly the substandard mud house he has forcefully stayed in for over a month.”
