Kwara United has advanced to the final of the President Federation Cup, defeating its U-19 youth team 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in the regulation time on Tuesday at the Kwara Football Academy Pitch, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
The match was a highly competitive and dramatic encounter, with both sides putting in impressive performances. The youth team dominated portions of the game, showcasing their skills and determination, sending a strong message to Coach Tunde Sanni about their potential inclusion in the senior team.
In a bid to break the deadlock, Coach Tunde Sanni introduced Wasiu Jimoh, Sodeeq Yusuf, and Sanni Nurudeen, which brought immediate attacking threats. Both Jimoh and Yusuf had close chances, but U-19 goalkeeper Kolawole Sheriff pulled off brilliant saves.
The youth team had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 75th minute when Kazeem Teslim was fouled in the box. However, Mohammed Abdullah’s penalty was saved by Adamu Abubakar, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate after 90 minutes.
In the decisive penalty shootout, Kwara United held their nerve, converting four penalties, while their U-19 counterparts managed just two, sealing the senior team’s place in the final.
Kwara United will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Foresight Football Academy and ABS Ilorin FC next Wednesday in the final of the Kwara FA President Federation Cup.
