Nigerian Aviation steps up Climate Action for Net-Zero 2060

Nigerian Aviation steps up Climate Action for Net-Zero 2060

At Abuja forum, Minister Festus Keyamo calls for strategic collaboration to cut airport emissions and boost Nigeria’s global aviation standing, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP) for net-zero emissions by 2060, the aviation sector has taken bold steps towards carbon reduction under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK).

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Stakeholders’ Engagement on “Airport Carbon Emission Management: The Role of Strategic and Intentional Collaboration Among Stakeholders” for Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the Minister stressed that sustainability must be at the heart of aviation growth. He noted that achieving Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) will not only cut emissions but also enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness as an aviation hub.

He commended the Managing Director and the entire team at FAAN for their visionary initiative in convening this forum and for their commitment to the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.

He further called for joint action by airlines, ground handlers, concessionaires, regulators, and energy providers to drive initiatives such as electrification of airport operations, introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and waste-to-energy projects. These efforts, he said, will ensure aviation serves as a pacesetter sector in actualizing the President’s green energy vision and securing a sustainable future for Nigeria’s economy.

The Minister highlighted that:

  • Achieving Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is both an environmental and a business imperative—signaling to the world that Nigeria is open for sustainable aviation business.
  • Collaboration among airlines, ground handlers, concessionaires, regulators, and energy providers is crucial to reducing emissions.
  • Concrete initiatives such as introducing renewable-powered ground equipment, exploring Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and developing waste-to-energy projects will be pursued.

This proactive approach positions aviation not just as a beneficiary of the President’s ETP but as a pacesetter sector in translating the Renewed Hope Agenda into measurable climate action.

Participants were drawn from aviation sister agencies, which includes Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, (NCAA); Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA); Nigerian Metereological Agency (NIMET); Nigerian Safety and Investigation Bereau (NSIB); Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) as well as National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), airline operators , ground handlers, fuel marketers, carhire service providers amongst others.

THE PRIME NEWS gathered that the event took place at the Dambazau Hall of the Correctional Service Event Centre, Airport Road, Abuja, on September 9, 2025.
