The Kwara State Fire Service has successfully contained a fire outbreak that engulfed a containerized supermarket along Lubcon Road in the Mandate area of Ilorin, preventing the inferno from spreading to nearby shops and properties, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, at about 3:08 a.m., at a supermarket container situated beside Peace Pharmacy on Lubcon Road.

According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters responded promptly to a distress call and swiftly brought the situation under control.

The affected structure, a container used as a supermarket, suffered damage from the fire before emergency responders successfully curtailed the spread of the flames.

Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service indicated that the fire was likely triggered by sparks from a high-tension electricity transmission line located directly above the supermarket. The sparks reportedly landed on combustible materials around the shop, igniting the blaze.

The rapid intervention of firefighters prevented what could have become a major fire disaster in the busy commercial area.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Superintendent Alabi Muhammed, cautioned residents and business owners against constructing shops, buildings, or other structures directly beneath or close to high-tension power lines.

He emphasized that such locations pose significant safety and fire risks, urging members of the public to adhere strictly to approved building regulations and safety standards.

Muhammed noted that compliance with proper siting guidelines remains essential to preventing avoidable fire outbreaks and protecting lives and property.

The Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to prompt emergency response and sustained public sensitisation on fire prevention and safety measures across the state.
