The Kwara State House of Assembly has commenced legislative action on two critical issues affecting the state electricity infrastructure and the menace of cultism as lawmakers held plenary sessions on Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
According to statement shared by Abdulmumini the SA on New Media to the Speaker and obtained by THE PRIME NEWS on Wednesday evening
During Tuesday’s sitting, the House passed the Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill, 2025 through first reading. The bill seeks to repeal outdated rural electricity laws from 1992 and 2006 and aims to boost electricity supply by supporting independent power generation, transmission, and distribution networks across the state.

The motion was sponsored by Hon. Rukayat Shittu (Owode/Onire) and seconded by Hon. Omotosho Olakunle Rasaq (Isin).
The proposed law is expected to accelerate economic growth by improving energy access in both urban and rural areas. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Business and Rules for further legislative action.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, May 7, the House also passed the Secret Cults and Secret Societies (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2025 for first reading. The amendment, moved by Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salahu (Omupo), proposes stiffer penalties for individuals involved in cult-related activities in the state, reflecting growing concerns about security and youth involvement in violent groups.
The Clerk to the House was directed to circulate copies of both bills ahead of their second readings.
Lawmakers also deliberated on motions related to curbing illegal cooperative societies and addressing street begging. However, the electricity and cultism bills drew particular attention due to their long-term impact on public safety and infrastructure development.
