The league was officially formed on 20 February 1992 after clubs in the First Division voted to break away from the Football League. The aim was to create a more commercially driven top division, improve broadcasting revenue, and modernise the game.

The inaugural season kicked off on 15 August 1992, with 22 clubs competing in the new structure. This replaced the old First Division as the highest level of English football.
