Governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have agreed to adopt a consensus approach in selecting the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 election.
The decision was reached during a strategic meeting involving gubernatorial and National Assembly aspirants, party stakeholders and leaders, held on Sunday at the Abuja residence of party leader, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

Those present at the meeting including Prof. Ali Ahmad, Engr. Kale Kawu, Mallam Omar Bolaji Gambari, Alhaji Ladi Hassan and Mr. Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN) reportedly expressed their willingness to abide by the outcome of a consensus arrangement and support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
In their separate remarks, the aspirants pledged to return to Kwara within 48 hours to brief their supporters on the decision and mobilise them to align with the consensus process in the interest of party unity.
They noted that adopting consensus would minimise internal divisions, strengthen cohesion within the party and position the PDP as a united front ahead of the campaign period.
Reacting, Saraki commended the aspirants for their commitment to unity but cautioned that consensus agreements often face challenges when outcomes do not favour all parties involved.
He said further consultations would be carried out with key stakeholders to ensure that any decision reached is widely accepted.
The meeting also had in attendance prominent party figures, including former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje; National PDP Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN); Kwara PDP Chairman, Hon. Adamu Bawa and other state executives, aspirants and Board of Trustees members from the state.
The move signals a renewed effort within the party to consolidate its ranks and enhance its chances ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.
