Fresh indications emerging from within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) suggest that supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are increasingly viewing Prof. Wale Sulaiman as a possible consensus figure ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.
According to party sources, ongoing consultations within influential APC circles followed concerns over growing internal divisions within the Kwara chapter of the party and the need to maintain cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.
Insiders disclosed that recent political developments, including disagreements surrounding earlier consensus discussions among stakeholders, reportedly triggered fresh considerations within the party on the need for a less divisive candidate capable of uniting various blocs.

Sources familiar with the discussions claimed that Prof. Sulaiman’s growing profile within the APC has been strengthened by his reputation as a technocrat, bridge-builder and relatively neutral figure among competing interests within the party.
A senior APC source said the broader concern among party leaders was to avoid a contentious governorship primary capable of weakening the APC’s electoral chances in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The focus now is on stability, unity and protecting the party from internal crisis.
There is increasing belief among some stakeholders that Prof. Wale Sulaiman possesses the temperament and broad acceptability needed to calm tensions within the APC,” the source stated.
Another party insider noted that the neurosurgeon and public health expert is increasingly being viewed as a candidate with the ability to maintain cordial relationships across different factions within the party.
According to the source, Prof. Sulaiman’s non-confrontational approach to politics and emphasis on inclusive leadership have contributed to his rising acceptance among stakeholders across the three senatorial districts.
Investigations also revealed that some APC strategists are reportedly working to strengthen his grassroots structures in parts of the state where established political interests remain dominant.
Party insiders disclosed that attention is being placed on expanding ward-level mobilisation, youth engagement networks, women participation structures and broader political coordination ahead of the party primaries.
“There is recognition that popularity and professional accomplishments alone are not enough in grassroots politics.
Efforts are ongoing to deepen political structures and stakeholder engagement across the state,” another source said.
Observers within the APC also believe that ongoing political calculations are being influenced by concerns over possible opposition resurgence in Kwara State ahead of 2027.
Some stakeholders reportedly warned that unresolved internal divisions within the ruling party could create opportunities for opposition forces to regain political ground if the APC fails to present a broadly acceptable candidate.
The source added that Prof. Sulaiman is increasingly being projected within some APC circles as a stabilising figure capable of preserving party unity while sustaining electoral competitiveness in the state.
Although no official position has been announced by the Presidency or the APC national leadership, consultations among party stakeholders are said to be continuing quietly as succession discussions intensify ahead of the governorship primaries.
Political analysts say the unfolding developments reflect broader efforts within the APC to prioritise party cohesion, internal stability and electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 elections in Kwara State.
