Kwara VCRU arrest two suspected cultists, recover firearm in Ilorin crackdown

The Kwara State Police Command says it has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on cultism and violent crime, with the arrest of two suspected cult members and the recovery of a locally fabricated firearm in Ilorin.l, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in collaboration with other tactical teams of the Command, following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance across parts of the metropolis.

The first suspect, identified as Abdullahi Jimoh Omotoho, 33, was arrested over alleged involvement in cult-related activities within Ilorin. During the operation, officers recovered a locally fabricated Beretta pistol from him.

Further investigations and intelligence gathered from the initial arrest reportedly led operatives to another suspect, Abdullahi Kareem Kawu, popularly known as “B-Red,” who was subsequently apprehended and is currently assisting investigators.

The Police said the second suspect is providing useful information to aid ongoing efforts aimed at dismantling cult networks and other criminal groups operating within the state.

Preliminary investigations, according to the Command, have already yielded actionable leads into the activities of suspected gangs within Ilorin metropolis. Security operatives are also intensifying efforts to track down other members linked to the criminal network.

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekemi, praised the operatives for what he described as their professionalism, vigilance, and commitment to duty.

He reiterated the Command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-led policing and proactive operations aimed at ensuring that criminal elements find no safe haven in any part of Kwara State.

The Police Commissioner also warned individuals involved in cultism and other violent activities to desist or be ready to face the full weight of the law. He further urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to enhance public safety.

The Command confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
