Tinubu inaugurates State Police implementation committee, appoints AbdulRazaq, Gbajabiamila, others

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated a Presidential Working Group to develop the legal framework for the implementation of state police in Nigeria, appointing the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, alongside the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other key stakeholders into the committee, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

The committee, inaugurated on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, is chaired by Gbajabiamila and is expected to produce an implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill following the Senate’s passage of the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill, 2026.

Speaking at the inauguration, Tinubu, represented by Gbajabiamila, said the proposed legislation would provide the legal structure for the operation of state police, covering issues such as policing standards, accountability, human rights safeguards, federal-state coordination, and personnel transition.

Other members of the committee include the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Chairman of the NGF Committee on State Police, and other relevant officials.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, described the initiative as timely, urging state governors to facilitate the speedy ratification of the constitutional amendment by their respective Houses of Assembly.

Also speaking, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, representing the NGF, pledged the commitment of all 36 governors to ensure the prompt passage of the legislation, describing state police as a major step toward strengthening community-based security across the country.
