Kwara NSCDC handles over 100 gender-related cases in six months

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, says it handled over 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026, recording significant successes in tackling gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable persons across the state, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I Ayoola Michael Shola on Wednesday during a media briefing held at the Command Headquarters in Ilorin.

The State Commandant, Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed revealed that the Command secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender within the six-month period, describing the development as a major milestone in the Corps’ efforts to ensure justice for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

According to the Commandant, the Command’s Gender Unit recorded 36 cases of domestic violence, with 12 currently undergoing mediation, while 24 have been resolved through various interventions.

He added that the Unit also handled 19 child custody disputes, successfully resolving 15 cases, with four others still pending.

Commandant Abbas further disclosed that the Command received 38 cases of child abandonment during the period under review. He said six of the cases have been resolved, while investigations and welfare interventions are ongoing in the remaining cases to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected children.

THE PRIME NEWS reports that the Command also recorded nine abduction cases between January and June, with four victims successfully reunited with their families through the timely intervention of NSCDC personnel.

On sexual offences, the Commandant said eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts for prosecution.

He stressed that the Command remains committed to ensuring perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Commandant Abbas commended officers of the Gender Unit for their professionalism, dedication and commitment in handling sensitive cases, noting that their efforts have strengthened public confidence in the Corps.

He also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of gender-based violence to the NSCDC for swift intervention.

The Commandant reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable members of society through diligent investigation, effective law enforcement and strategic collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
