Kwara firefighters contain early-morning residential fire in Ilorin

The Kwara State Fire Service has successfully contained an early-morning fire outbreak that engulfed parts of a residential building off Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin, preventing what could have resulted in extensive property damage, THE PRIME NEWS reports.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, opposite Metropolitan Square, off Asa-Dam Road.

According to the Fire Service, an emergency distress call was received at about 2:27 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene.

THE PRIME NEWS reports that the rescue team arrived within eight minutes, at approximately 2:35 a.m. and swiftly commenced firefighting operations.

Their prompt intervention brought the blaze under control by about 2:40 a.m., successfully preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

The affected property comprised eight room-and-parlour self-contained apartments alongside a storey building containing four-bedroom flats.

The fire damaged two of the self-contained apartment blocks, while the remaining apartments and the nearby storey building were saved from the inferno.

Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service indicated that the fire was triggered by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials inside the affected apartments.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Fire Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, CFS Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to adopt preventive safety measures by installing surge protection devices and using standard electrical fittings in their homes.

He also advised property owners to conduct regular inspections and maintenance of electrical wiring, avoid overloading electrical outlets and promptly notify the Fire Service whenever a fire outbreak occurs.

According to him, early reporting of fire incidents significantly improves the chances of saving lives and protecting property.
