As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Alhaji Issa Isiaka Funsho, has called for a shift towards higher standards in leadership selection within the party.
In a statement issued on May 4, 2026, Funsho stressed the need for stakeholders and citizens to prioritise character, competence, and capacity when evaluating aspirants, noting that anything short of these qualities could undermine the progress recorded in the state.
He observed that the political landscape in Kwara has, at different times, been shaped by sentiments that do not always reflect the demands of effective governance, urging a transition to a more mature democratic culture driven by vision and proven ability.

Funsho described the emergence of Prof. Wale Sulaiman in the state’s political space as a turning point, saying it has introduced a renewed focus on competence, global exposure and results-driven governance.
According to him, Sulaiman’s track record as a neurosurgeon, public health expert, and former Special Adviser on Health Matters highlights a leadership style grounded in measurable impact, particularly in strengthening healthcare delivery and system reforms.
He also commended Sulaiman’s emphasis on unity and inclusiveness within the APC, noting that his approach aligns with the need to maintain cohesion and sustain the developmental strides achieved under the current administration.
The APC chieftain expressed confidence that Sulaiman represents a credible option for consolidating ongoing reforms and advancing the state’s development agenda.
He concluded by urging stakeholders to rethink political choices and embrace leadership defined by integrity and proven competence, stating that such an approach remains key to sustaining progress in Kwara State.
